Code of Conduct

This Code applies to all persons who are members, employees, helpers or participants acting on behalf of Orpington Ojays Swimming Club. The purpose of the code is to provide a safe and friendly environment for everyone. A breach of the code by a member may give rise to disciplinary action as detailed in the club rules.

All members shall be treated equally irrespective of gender, ethnic origin, disability, religious or political beliefs. The individuals’ rights are paramount.


  1. All Persons shall: Refrain from either physical or verbal abuse of others and shall respect the property of others.


  2. Bullying in any form will not be tolerated. Any report of bullying shall be acted upon, without delay, by the committee or a panel appointed by them. A victim or concerned party may refer the matter as a complaint direct to the ASA (01509 618700) or contact the NSPCC confidential Child Helpline (Swimline) on 0808 100 4001 (24hrs)


  3. Whilst representing Orpington Ojays Swimming Club all persons shall behave in an appropriate manner and refrain from any activity likely to bring the club into disrepute. They shall respect the rights of others to participate and refrain from any act or omission likely to cause damage, loss or disruption.


  4. All persons are responsible for their own health and safety and shall refrain from any act likely to compromise the health or safety of others.


  5. Any adult person having one-to-one contact with children whilst acting for Orpington Ojays Swimming Club is required to register to the ASA for inclusion on the Child Protection List. Forms / advice is available from the club secretary.


  6. Whilst travelling to/from venues on transport arranged or provided by Orpington Ojays Swimming Club swimmers will be under the control of member(s) of Orpington Ojays Swimming Club. They shall follow the safety instructions of the coach driver and wear any seat belts provided.


  7. Coaches / Teachers have the right or temporary exclusion of a swimmer if their behaviour is deemed inappropriate. This exclusion will cover all or part of a session and will be reported to an officer of the committee. A swimmer under 18 years old, who is excluded, must remain on pool side until a responsible adult takes charge of them. If the coach seeks a longer exclusion, the matter shall be brought to the attention of the committee who will decide on the course of action to be taken within the ASA or club rules.


  8. A swimmer should normally attend a complete training session. Where possible, coaches should be notified if a swimmer will be leaving early or arriving late, before the start of the session.


  9. Swimmers in competitive squads should be available for team selection. They should notify the Team Manager as soon as possible if they are unable to attend an event for which they have been selected, giving reasons for their absence. Failure to do so or repeated unavailability may result in non-selection for future teams and / or a change of squad.


  10. Coaches/Teachers should agree goals with their swimmers. These should take account of an individuals needs and requirements and shall be re-assessed in the light of changing circumstances. All goals should be challenging, realistic, achievable and meaningful. Squad changes will be based upon the swimmer’s performance in relation to their goals and performance at Galas. Criteria for squad entry will be reviewed annually.


  11. Head Coaches in consultation with the other coaches / teachers shall decide on recommendations for squad changes. Swimmers shall be given reasonable notice of any such proposed change. During this time they have the right of appeal to the coach through the Training Secretary where possible. If dissatisfied they may make a written protest to the committee who shall deal with the matter in accordance with club rules.


  12. Smoking or the consumption of alcohol by swimmers during club swimming / training activities or whilst travelling on club organised transport is not permitted.


  13. Substance abuse is a very serious matter and will not be tolerated at any level. Any members suspecting substance misuse should report the matter immediately.


  14. The Club / Coach shall do everything possible to ensure a safe environment for swimming activities. They shall respect the rules governing the sport and any guidelines issued by the Pool owner / operator. Health and Safety laws and any relevant by-laws or rules of the club shall be complied with.



Breaches of this code. If the alleged breach is also a Breach of ASA law, the matter will be referred to the ASA District Judicial Tribunal. For other breaches they will be dealt with, by the Committee of Orpington Ojays Swimming Club, as a dispute. The matter will be dealt with in accordance with the ASA guidelines. Orpington Ojays Swimming Club may apply sanctions for a breach of its rules/ code to a member. These include verbal or written warning or suspension from club activities. In serious cases a member may, after a hearing, be expelled. In all cases a party under the age of eighteen must be advised of their right to be accompanied by a parent/guardian. A child under 18 must not be interviewed without a parent / guardian being present. The wishes of both parties when dealing with a dispute and where appropriate, any penalty, will be taken into consideration.
